What is 1 Chronicles about?

1 Chronicles retells Israel’s story from Adam to the end of David’s reign. Its opening genealogies connect the restored community with earlier generations, while the narrative gives sustained attention to David, Jerusalem, the ark, organised worship and preparations for the temple that Solomon will build.

How to study 1 Chronicles

Do not skip the genealogies as meaningless lists. Mark where lines narrow toward Israel, Judah, Levi, Benjamin and the Jerusalem community, then note how those groups reappear in the narrative. Compare parallel episodes in Samuel without assuming that different selection or arrangement is contradiction; ask what each account chooses to emphasise. Track every reference to Levites, musicians, gatekeepers, offerings and temple resources.

Context and translation note

Ancient genealogies can be selective, may use “son” for later descendants and sometimes preserve names with spelling variations. Numbers and personal names also differ across manuscripts and translations.
